Hey all,
Kya here, Aurelia’s Founder and Editor-in-Chief. As you may have seen last month on Instagram, we had to make the really difficult decision to stop publishing as our budget just wasn’t feasible.
Aurelia’s staff – three women of colour, including myself – aren’t paid, apart from when we partner with brands. In those cases we keep 10% each of the fee.
All of the rest of the money we make, including memberships and one-off donations, goes to paying our writers, working on new ideas and web fees.
I really cannot imagine a world where Aurelia ceases to exist. Aurelia has been my baby since I made it in the bedroom of my university halls back at the start of 2019. Since then we have gone from strength to strength, publishing so many beautiful pieces that reinforce our main belief: that personal writing is vital and a much needed form within the clickbait-centric media landscape.
I have said all of this before – and I never get bored because it means so much to me. I pay a lot of the wages I make elsewhere into Aurelia and for a while that was our main bread and butter. But it only got us so far.
I am appealing to you today. If you love our content as much as I’d like to believe you do, then please help us stand against the billionaires and retain our space in publishing and online media. We have so many amazing ideas that we want to bring to life – so if you could be a part of making them happen, we’d all be forever in your debt.
There are two ways to help us fight. Either by becoming a member, or making a one-off donation of any amount. We hope to be back by August – until then we have a few backlogged pieces to publish throughout June that were already commissioned and paid for.
Thank you for reading, and we hope to be with you again in August.
All the love in the world,
Kya Buller
