Hey all! If you follow us on Twitter, no doubt you’ll have seen that we were criticised and belittled for offering a fee of £40 per article at this point in our publication’s history.

I thought I’d clear a few things up: that we’re independent, self-funded from our own pockets, paying writers what we can afford, and not taking any of the money we make from donations ourselves — instead, it goes back to the writers.

In the beginning, we were volunteer-led and unable to offer anything. We have made huge progress to now offer £40. The plan has always been to offer more (and we announced this), but to some it’s not good enough.

We have been shamed, called out and patronised. Marginalised people deserve to tell their stories in a safe and compassionate environment. It’s not as easy to be heard or have work valued as some (more privileged) people seem to think. Also, working class people deserve to be able to start their own things without having investors. We’re doing our best and we’ve made something beautiful.

There has been an outpouring of support! So thank you for that and your donations. It means the world. We’re going to continue uplifting those that deserve it, and keep carving out a truly inclusive space for personal writing. Thank you

We are always looking for new angles (take a look on the website to make sure your pitch hasn’t already been covered) and we’re especially interested in pitches that look at sex, dating, identity, family history, relationship, and small moments - as an outlet that champions the personal essay, we’re proving it doesn’t revolve around trauma / grief.

Our rate is £40! We are self-funded/reliant on memberships and donations so hopefully with your support this will be higher in the future.
